Bottom Line

Podere il Pino, situated in the picturesque Tuscan countryside outside San Gimignano, is a historic Tuscan farm whose buildings have been restored as holiday villas and apartments. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and postcard-worthy views of beautiful Gimignano, the old stone buildings evoke romantic images of Tuscany. Rooms are no-frills but quaint and include fully equipped kitchens. The grounds are also home to a large outdoor pool, from which there are incredible views of San Gimignano's towers. There are plenty of outdoor sitting areas, a grill, free Wi-Fi, free parking, and satellite TV; shuttle services and babysitting can be arranged. Podere il Pino is popular with self-sufficient couples, groups, and families on vacation, and attracts devoted repeat guests.

Podere il Pino

Scene

Historic Tuscan farm with picturesque grounds and views but basic interiors

A historic farm nestled among the hills of Chianti, Podere il Pino offers a romantic picture of the Tuscan countryside. The verdant grounds are filled with flowers and cypress trees, and there are views of surrounding vineyards, olive groves, and the medieval town of San Gimignano at every turn. Apart from a few sitting and grill areas with plastic tables and chairs scattered around the grounds, the only real common area is the outdoor pool, with a brick deck, lounge chairs, and panoramic views of San Gimignano. The apartments themselves are bland and basic (save for a few charming details, such as wood ceiling beams), but families, couples, and groups of friends return regularly to lounge on the grounds and explore the area..

Location

Not far from San Gimignano, in the Tuscan countryside, reached by a hard-to-find dirt road

Podere il Pino is ideally set within the scenic rolling hills of Tuscany's Chianti wine region. While the grounds and area are picturesque, the hotel is difficult to reach; the access road is unpaved and hard to find. The poor quality of the road means that it takes approximately 20 minutes to drive to San Gimignano, and 30 minutes to drive to Siena. There is free parking on-site, and the hotel can arrange airport transfers as well as shuttles or private drivers for the region.

Rooms

Basic, no-frills apartments and villas with historic architectural features and plenty of space

Podere il Pino's 12 apartments and villas are all self-catering, with fully equipped kitchens and all necessary linens. The historic buildings are picturesque, but the restored interiors are bland and basic, with no-frills light-wood furniture and simple metal bed frames. Bedspreads and sofas are dated in style, but many rooms have retained original architectural features, such as wood ceiling beams and terra-cotta tile floors, and the walls in some of the larger villas are decorated with vintage botanical prints. All apartments and villas have kitchens, dining areas, and living rooms, so there's ample living space. Bathrooms vary in style -- some feel more recently renovated than others -- and have either small shower stalls or tubs with hand-held showerheads. There's a flat-screen TV in the living room, and Wi-Fi is free.
