The Sungu Resort & Spa
Jl. Raya Penestanan

The Sungu Resort & Spa is a 15-room upper-middle-range property situated in the quaint village of Penestanan. It's about a 20-minute walk into central Ubud from the hotel, but guests who'd prefer not to walk can take the free hotel shuttle. Decor throughout features local artwork and antiques that come together to create a rich, rustic look. Rooms continue this motif, with lovely Balinese style, and most have open-air bathrooms -- bi-level villas with private pools are also available. The two shared pools are lovely, surrounded by lush plantings and flowers, and the charming art-filled restaurants host free breakfast and afternoon tea. For something even more intimate and with lovely rice-field views, check out The Samara, a sharp little hotel that's a shorter walk to town and has similar rates.

Aria Villas Ubud
Jl. Tirta Tawar, Banjar Kutuh Kelod, Br. Kutuh Kelod

Aria Villas Ubud is a contemporary upscale property consisting of only eight villas next to a small river valley just a 15-minute walk from the center of Ubud. Each stand-alone villa is done in a sleek blend of rustic and urban-chic minimalism, and all have private pools and nice outdoor spaces. Meals, including a free breakfast, are delivered to villas, and perks include free afternoon fresh-fruit popsicles plus free short welcome massages. There are no public spaces here, so travelers who like to interact with other guests may want to look elsewhere. For those who don't mind being a bit farther from the center of town, Wapa di Ume has lovely rooms with terraces and way more on-site features at lower rates.

Royal Villa Jepun
Jl. Raya Sanggingan, Kedewatan

Royal Villa Jepun is a budget hotel with 10 rooms, located in the hillside village of Sangingan and a 10-minute drive from downtown Ubud. The boutique property features a gorgeous tropical garden setting and the ambience is tranquil and serene. The individual cottage dwellings have garden views and feature Balinese red brick facades, great light and airflow, open-air bathrooms, and spacious balconies. Rooms interiors are outfitted with solid wood furniture and standard modern amenities (no TVs though) though they can look a bit dated. On-site facilities include an outdoor lagoon-style swimming pool and a small restaurant serving vegan and raw meals. For an alternative downtown Ubud hotel, Sri Bungalows is a good option with similar room rates.

Bhanuswari Resort & Spa
Jl. Tengkulak

The Bhanuswari Resort & Spa is a locally owned and run vacation complex set in tropical gardens, a 15-minute drive from Ubud. While the rice field surroundings are particularly picturesque and peaceful, parts of the grounds look a bit tired, as do some of the Standard Rooms. Villas, however, are nicely finished, with private gardens, kitchens, and plunge pools. While the mid-range Bhanuswari is not the most impressive resort of its ilk, the setting is lovely and rates are certainly some of the cheapest for this level of lodging.

Inang Ubud Villa
Br. Kelabangmoding, Temukuaya

The six-room Inang Ubud Villa is a gem of a mid-range property, situated on gorgeous tropical grounds overlooking rice fields. It's about a 10-minute drive outside Ubud, with little to do in the immediate area, but the hotel provides free shuttle service to town daily. Rooms are spacious and clean, and they all have balconies or terraces. One has its own garden with a gazebo and koi pond, while the two-bedroom Family Suite overlooks the beautiful outdoor pool and rice fields. Breakfast is free, and afternoon tea and dinner are available as well. Previous guests rave about the friendly owners and staff, as well as the peace and serenity found here. Alternatively, the Bali Villa Ubud adds a spa and hot tub, though it's equally far from town.

Villa Semana
Banjar Semana, Desa Singakerta

The 10-room Villa Semana is an upscale hotel that provides a quiet, romantic vacation geared toward adults (no children under 12 are allowed). The Ayung River winds past a hillside gazebo, charming spa, thatched-roof restaurant, and infinity pool on this lovely property. There are also village walks, cooking classes, yoga, and tours available. Stylish, serene Balinese villas feature flat-screen TVs, lily ponds, private pools, and outdoor showers, in some. However, the main pool and some bathrooms could use some updates. The Komaneka at Tanggayuda offers updated luxurious furnishings, but prices may be higher. Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking are all free.

KajaNe Mua
Monkey Forest Road, Kajane Mua Beach Front

Located in central Ubud on busy Monkey Forest Road, KajaNe Mua is a Balinese-owned, four-pearl property with fantastic resort facilities. There are 22 rooms available ranging from spacious doubles in the main building to private rustic-chic villas with their own gardens and plunge pools. The property’s lush gardens, tranquil spa, and library provide a welcome sanctuary and more luxurious stay than other central Ubud hotels (like Cendana Resort up the road). With free Wi-Fi, a free breakfast, a free shuttle around town plus free bike rentals and a fitness center, it is an ideal choice for families as well as couples looking for romance.

The Payogan Villa Resort & Spa
Jl. Cocoa 2 no. 77, Banjar Bunutan, Desa Kedewatan P.O. BOX 999

The Payogan Villa Resort & Spa is an upscale resort with 45 villas nestled into the hillside about 20 minutes from Ubud. The setting is spectacular, and each of the villas have been positioned to take advantage of the gorgeous countryside views. They are spacious and modern -- with rich accents like hardwood and stone -- and many have their own private plunge pools or outdoor bathtubs. Modern features like flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi are standard. The main infinity pool is a highlight, with lush plantings all around it and views of the jungle, and the resort also has a spa, a lovely lounge, and two restaurants. For similar style and features, travelers could check out the Puri Gangga Resort, which has ancient temple views, but is farther from central Ubud.

Sunset Hill
Jalan Bangkiang Sidem 88 Keliki, Tegallalang 80561 Gianyar, Bali Indonesia

Sunset Hill is a small three-and-a-half-pearl hotel in a secluded jungle setting near the famous Campuhan Ridge Walk, a 20-minute drive from central Ubud. The highlight here is the relaxing atmosphere and the long hilltop infinity pool overlooking the neighboring valley. The hotel also features a spa, yoga studio, free hot-and-cold breakfast, and bistro restaurant with Indonesian and Western fare. The seven rooms, suites, and villas have a refined Balinese look. All come with minibars and electric kettles, though there are no TVs and Wi-Fi can be spotty. Travelers willing to pay higher room rates for a more luxurious stay in this area might consider the nearby Uma by COMO Ubud.

Abangan Bungalow
Raya Ubud St

Abangan Bungalows is a two-pearl budget property that's a two-minute walk from the center of Ubud. There are plenty of trees and tropical greenery all around, and three different bungalow categories -- Fan Rooms, Air-Conditioned Rooms, and Family Rooms. Bungalows and rooms are in need of an update and show peeling paint, moldy walls, run-down bathrooms, and mishmash furniture. They do at least feel private, and the hotel has a simple, laid-back vibe. Facilities include a small pool and a free breakfast served in the hotel's lobby. Still, it's worth looking around. Tegal Sari is a nice upgrade -- rooms are cleaner, better maintained, and contain fridges, kettles, and safes, all of which are missing from Abangan Bungalows.
