Bottom Line

The 278-room InterContinental Washington D.C. - The Wharf is a modern, upscale property right off The Wharf in south D.C. Contemporary rooms have comfortable beds, neutral decor, floor-to-ceiling windows for great light and views, Nespresso machines, and SMART TVs. Suites add L'Occitane toiletries, expanded minibars, and separate lounging areas. The hotel has a popular rooftop pool and bar with great views but limited sunbeds, an Afro-Caribbean restaurant helmed by a "Top Chef" alum, spa, and state-of-the-art-gym. However, expect expensive valet-only parking and occasional minor issues. There are several event and meeting room options, free fiber optic Wi-Fi, and pets are allowed with restrictions and a flat fee. For an upscale option on The Wharf that comes with free breakfast, check out the similarly priced Canopy by Hilton Washington DC The Wharf

Oyster Hotel Review

InterContinental Washington D.C. The Wharf

Scene

Sleek property with Washington Channel views and stylish, if subdued, design

The InterContinental Washington D.C. - The Wharf opened in late 2017, and it has a contemporary, albeit subdued, look that heavily features neutral tones on brushed metals, chic seating, and decorative details. Furniture has a modern midcentury feel, while large light fixtures hang from the ceiling in public areas, punctuating the space with both a classy and industrial feel. Lots of floor-to-ceiling windows provide great natural light and views out over the Washington Channel and the Potomac River. However, while the hotel looks great, some guests have reported minor issues with rooms and service. This hotel is popular for its stunning views, excellent location, and style, attracting a mix of leisure and business travelers.

Rooms

Classy and contemporary rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, Nespresso machines, and SMART TVs

All 278 rooms and suites reflect the sophisticated and modern style found in the hotel's public spaces. Clean lines and neutral tones are classy, while maze-like carpeting and old photos on the walls provide some necessary character. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in lots of natural light, and upgrades to river view rooms sacrifice a little bit of space in favor of spectacular views. Standard amenities consist of Nespresso machines and kettles, soft bathrobes, free Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth-enabled flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms have in-mirror lighting, modern walk-in glass showers, hairdryers, and toiletries. Suite upgrades include expanded minibars with wet bars, separate living spaces, and L'Occitane toiletries, plus soaking tubs. Classic rooms typically have a word desk space, though this is usually larger in suites. Some rooms have balconies, and some suites have extras like in-room pool tables. Mini-fridges and microwaves are available on request, but subject to availability.

Features

Popular rooftop pool and bar, well-regarded restaurant, and excellent business features

The hotel's rooftop is popular during warmer months thanks to a long pool, small bar, and fantastic views over the marina. However, be warned that the extra-wide cushioned sunbeds go quickly, especially since the pool area is open to the public. Sunbathers often crowd the wooden deck on towels, while young kids often commandeer the pool. Another frequented hotel spot is the Kith and Kin restaurant that serves well-regarded Afro-Caribbean cuisine from Chef Kwame Onwuachi of "Top Chef" fame. Room service is also available.

This property has over 17,000 square feet of event space, ranging from meeting rooms to ballrooms with different configurations. All rooms have elegant decor and natural light, and several have beautiful views over the waterfront. Events can also be set up with separate check-in areas and with additional exhibit space. Other business features include dry cleaning service and a 24-hour business center, plus on-site print, fax, and copy services.

Additional amenities consist of a spacious, sun-lit gym with state-of-the-art machines, exercise balls, and free weights. Expect floor-to-ceiling windows with great views over the waterfront, plus free self-serve bottled water and fresh fruit. There's also an upscale spa, though this was still under construction during our visit. The hotel accepts one cat or dog per room for a flat fee as long as the animal is under 40 pounds. Babysitting and nanny services are available for an extra fee. Only valet parking is available and it's pricey.
