Hotel Jorge V

The building that houses Hotel Jorge V is yellow with its name painted on the side. It’s modern, though shows some signs of age that aptly reflect the tired interior decor. Tan and brown tiles cover the floors, walls, and front desk in the small lobby. There’s also a single velour armchair as well as a few plants here and there. Farther in, there’s a section of couches and armchairs in two rows facing each other. Partition walls made up of clear glass or printed fabric separate the seating area from the small, dated breakfast room. The exposed stone walls appear fake, though in an effort to make the room slightly classy, the tables have white tablecloths and salmon-colored chairs. The bar has a dated '70s vibe with wood paneled walls and faded, worn red armchairs. This is definitely a cheapie spot, and well-suited for budget travelers who won’t be spending a lot of time inside. 

Hotel Jorge V’s prime feature is its location, as it's in between a business district and downtown Lisbon, an area that's home to most of the tourist attractions. The property sits just around the corner from the popular Avenida da Liberdad -- a street filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Marques de Pombal Square is a six-minute walk from the hotel, while Rossio Square can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. The nearest metro station is a five-minute walk away, making it easy to reach attractions like Sao Jorge Castle or Belem Tower. It’s a 20-minute drive to Lisbon's Portela Airport, or about 40 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms at Hotel Jorge V are clean and decently sized, but decor is plain and dated, showing signs of wear and tear throughout. Moss-green bed runners match the box-valance curtains, while the maroon armchairs and stools provide seating. The tan, green, and maroon patterned carpet unites the '70s color palette. Though rooms with balconies are nice, the city views aren’t spectacular, and the outdoor furnishings look worse for wear. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have espresso-makers, while Suites have separate rooms with an additional bed -- which is just a slipcovered mattress. The tan bathrooms have shower/tub combos, sinks with little space, toiletries, bidets, and hairdryers, some of which are the old hose-style

The Hotel Jorge V doesn't provide all you might expect for its price. There’s a basic breakfast, which can be included in room rates, that past guests have given mixed reviews. Another downside: The dining room can be crowded with long queues. Wi-Fi is free, and there’s a public computer in the hotel’s small bar that offers a limited selection of drinks. But there's no on-site restaurant serving lunch or dinner. Free parking is available, but there are only a few spaces and they’re subject to availability.
