Bottom Line

The Kingston Suites is a small and fashionable property in a beautiful classic European style building with a Parisian facade. The upscale hotel sits on a side street off of busy Sukhumvit Road, one of Bangkok's top dining, nightlife, and shopping streets, and while the hotel is a good 10- to -15 minute walk to the Skytrain or metro stations, it does have a free tuk-tuk shuttle service for guests. Classy rooms here are decked out with elegant furniture, with high ceilings and warm cream tones. The hotel does not have any features other than its tiny Thyme Bistro downstairs, although guests can use the gym and pool at the nearby Royal President which is under the same management.

Kingston Suites

Scene

No hangout spots other than the lobby

While the Kingston Suites is certainly a stylish and elegant property, it sure doesn't have much going on inside. As the hotel has absolutely no features other than a small restaurant downstairs, used mainly for breakfast, there aren't really any spots where guests can hang around, other than some of the spaces in the lobby, which mainly get used by those waiting for visitors or pickups. Most of the guests here tend to be corporate types, and as the backside of the hotel is a condominium under the same management catering to long-term stays, this is a quiet spot where most folks are out working or at meetings by day, and then home at night. With such elegant rooms, it isn't much surprise that guests would want to stick to the comfort of their rooms, and older clientele along with those with discerning and stylish tastes are the ones who will appreciate and gravitate to this spot.

The Kingston Suites is located down a side street about half a mile from Sukhumvit Road and the Skytrain and metro stations. While it's a solid 15 minute walk in the heat, the hotel does alleviate this by offering a free tuk-tuk shuttle service. Sukhumvit Road is packed with bars, restaurants, shopping, and all other conveniences, so it is a good location, and while the street up to the Kingston is narrow with a lot of traffic, the hotel itself is quiet. Plenty of taxis can be found along this street (Soi 15) as well, for access around town and to the airport. Due to the narrowness of Soi 15, it isn't all that pleasant for strolling around.

Rooms

Large flat-screen TVs, high ceilings, stylish furnishings, and free WiFi

Rooms here come in Superior, Deluxe, and Executive Corner categories. All rooms feature high ceilings, warm cream tones, and elegant furnishings; chairs, desks, carpeting, king-size beds (which get mixed reviews; some find them too hard), closet space, and plenty of amenities. There are large flat-screen LCD TVs in each room category (32-inch for Superior and Deluxe and 42-inch for Executive Corner), electronic safe boxes, robes and slippers, IDD phones, free Wi-Fi everywhere, hot water kettles for tea and coffee, and Cool Tech mini-fridges. The Executive rooms take up building corners, so they are larger, include DVD players, and have sofas and lots of living space. The only drawback to the rooms are the lack of views. Even the Executive rooms, which have larger windows, only look out on electric wires and urban mess, not to mention that some of these windows are cracked or in dire need of cleaning, one of the only detriments to what otherwise are very fine quarters. Some guests do complain of maintenance and wear issues.

Features

Just one small bistro restaurant serving breakfast as well as Thai food throughout the day and evening

The hotel unfortunately doesn't have any real features. While the rooms and building are elegant, there is no gym nor spa, and not even a swimming pool -- common hotel offerings in Thailand. Fortunately, guests can use the facilities of the Royal President Hotel, which is under the same management team and is just around the corner. The one public spot the hotel does have is the Thyme Bistro restaurant and bar which is located downstairs. Optional breakfast packages are available with the rooms, and Thyme serves the morning meal as well as Thai dishes throughout the day and night, although it doesn't seem too popular, especially in this neighborhood -- most guests opt to head out to Sukhumvit and its thousands of choices for eating and drinking.
