Bottom Line

The three-pearl Aisling Bed and Breakfast is located in a quiet and safe residential neighborhood in Boston’s South End. Many restaurants and shops are within a brief walk, as are public transit stations that give quick and easy access to numerous attractions. This converted Victorian row house offers just three guest rooms, so the setting is intimate and friendly. Guests rave about the free breakfast, as well as the clean and spacious rooms. Free street parking is available with advance reservations, and the owners can also provide airport transportation. Rates are competitive, but they’re not inexpensive and tend to spike on weekends. Hotel 140 in Boston’s Back Bay offers comparable rates and a great location only two blocks from Copley Square, but rooms are simple and not as charming.

Scene

Quaint and cozy bed-and-breakfast with intimate, homey ambiance

With only three rooms, this converted 19th-century Victorian row house is much like staying in someone’s private home. It’s a friendly and welcoming environment where the owners interact directly with guests and even offer to pick them up at the airport. It attracts tourists (mostly couples) from around the world who enjoy a more intimate experience. The home is furnished with period antiques and includes original marble fireplaces and moldings. Breakfast is served in a lovely dining room with rich red walls, a red Oriental rug, crystal chandelier, and a communal table, so guests dine family-style. The room, like the rest of the property, features an eclectic art collection that includes traditional and more contemporary pieces. Bookcases are located in the dining room and parlor, and guests can browse and borrow from the selection during their stays. The parlor includes a piano, marble fireplace, and Queen Anne sofas.

Rooms

Spacious, individually decorated rooms with nice bathrooms

All three rooms in this quaint property are individually and tastefully decorated in a traditional style. Comfortable queen beds are topped with white bedding, and bright white furniture creates a cheerful ambiance. Old plank floors are partially covered by high-quality rugs. Soft accent colors such as dusty rose, light blue, or light green are used on the walls with the exception of one wall in the Duleek Opulent Room that has whitewashed brick. Each room has a desk and at least one chair or sofa (the Murmod Sanctuary Room has a sleeper sofa). Some of the furniture is antique. Amenities include safes, free Wi-Fi, and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs with cable and pay-per-view options. Guests praise the rooms for being clean and quiet, but report that light from the street can be seen at night.

The street-level Duleek Opulent and Murmod Sanctuary Rooms share a private entrance and don’t allow children under five. The second-floor Salt Hill room is the largest, but there's no elevator. It also has the largest bathroom, with a twin vanity, plank-wood floors, and a shower/tub combo. The other two rooms offer enough space for comfort in both the bedroom and bathroom areas. Their bathrooms have white marble vanities, white tile floors, and small walk-in showers. All are stocked with Tommy Bahama toiletries.
