Bottom Line

At Pingnakorn is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel on the west side of Chiang Mai off of trendy Nimmanhaeminda Road. The location provides easy access to hip restaurants, bars, and shops, making the property a great choice for tourists. The 44 spacious rooms are a good value, with free Wi-Fi and breakfast -- and kitchenettes in some. The hotel lacks a pool and gym, but does have a charming little restaurant serving Thai and Western food, and a rooftop terrace. Art-lovers should appreciate the eclectic array of statues, photos, and paintings displayed throughout. Guests seeking a similar value property with a pool and old city proximity could try Raming Lodge Hotel & Spa.

Oyster Hotel Review

At Pingnakorn Hotel Chiangmai

Scene

Artsy boutique spot with eclectic, colorful decor and a lovely restaurant

From the outside, the property is a rather mundane-looking concrete building with pale-turquoise railings on the windows. However, once inside, the feeling is vibrant and artsy, as the owners have decorated with yellow and robin's-egg-blue walls, colorfully tiled floors and umbrella stands, and traditional wooden window shutters. Still, there isn't too much going on, as there are few facilities here, and most guests are out enjoying trendy Nimmanhaeminda Road. However, for those who like a tranquil and stylish spot to relax in, the hotel does have its charming Le Nakara Restaurant -- where guests will be found enjoying the inclusive breakfasts, and locals come to enjoy lunch surrounded by beautiful artwork comprised of photos of Chiang Mai, peacock wall murals, sculpted elephant planters, hanging lanterns, and other traditional Thai pieces. Sadly, while the hotel seems set up for more long-term residents -- with its many kitchenette-equipped rooms -- guests don't tend to hang out and admire the lovely surroundings.

Location

In Chiang Mai's trendiest -- and highly trafficked -- neighborhood

At Pingnakorn is located down a dead-end lane off trendy Nimmanhaeminda Road on Chiang Mai's west side. This new area is within 15-minutes' drive of the airport and Chiang Mai University, and home to the most happening bars, restaurants, and fashionable shops. It's a popular area for the young and wealthy, but constant traffic makes reaching downtown and the historic old city difficult -- both are about 15 to 20 minutes without traffic. However, the hotel is near roads leading to Mae Rim, the mountains, Chiang Dao, and Pai, which are between 40 minutes and a few hours away.

Rooms

Large and well-furnished rooms; most with kitchenettes

There are a variety of rooms to choose from, all decorated with colorful paintings and variously patterned fabrics. Rooms have wood and natural-color furnishings, including tables, chairs, and cozy sofas. All come with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, while all except the standard Superior rooms have minibars and kitchenettes -- with microwave ovens, sinks, cutlery, electric kettles, and plenty of counter space -- and charming balconies with wrought-iron railings. Bathrooms are nicely tiled in white with black and blue accents, and have stall showers. Compared to anything downtown, the prices for these rooms are a steal.

Charming restaurant serving free breakfast, rooftop terrace, and artsy decor throughout

At Pingnakorn lacks a gym, spa, and swimming pool. It does have a charming restaurant, Le Nakara, with cute corner niches where guests can settle in for free buffet breakfasts. The restaurant is also open the rest of the day and evening, serving up Thai and Western fare at reasonable prices. In addition to the restaurant, the hotel has a pleasant rooftop terrace to sit out on, and there are beautiful photos, paintings, and other stylish artworks interspersed throughout the building. The finely carved wooden doors are especially gorgeous and well worth checking out.
