Bottom Line

Cap Sud Caraibes is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel located in a quiet, fairly remote area between the towns of Gosier and Sainte Anne. The hotel’s eight rooms have an unpolished charm, with some featuring balconies or terraces with sea views. Many lack privacy, however, offering uncovered showers and bathrooms with curtains instead of doors. Modest on-site amenities include an appealing outdoor pool and two laid-back common areas with hammocks. A small but tasty continental breakfast is free and served in an airy hut. There’s a pretty local beach easily accessible on foot, but otherwise little to do and see within walking distance. Guests interested in a small, locally owned hotel might also want to consider La Metisse in Saint Francois, a moderately pricier mid-range property with more refined interiors.

Cap Sud Caraibes

Scene

Cute, locally owned guest house with eclectic touches and a laid-back ambiance

Guests arriving at Cap Sud Caraibes are met with a low white fence and well-worn entrance sign. Beyond a blue gate, a short stone path leads to the pool and the guest-room building, which looks like a large family home with an all-white facade set off by blue doors. The breakfast area is set under a separate hut facing toward the pool. A mix of hammocks, tables, and sofas allow this hut to serve as a common area throughout the rest of the day. The hut is decorated in blues and whites, with curios ranging from tagines and Delft blue-style pottery to vintage-style bird cages and bowls filled with seashells. Green lawns with well-landscaped vegetation surround these areas of the locally owned property.

Most guests head out for the day after breakfast, and those who decide to linger will often find themselves alone by the pool. There's also space for solo lounging in the hut or the second common area, a covered space with cushioned seating, a hammock, and views of the sea. With no on-site restaurant open for dinner and no nightlife nearby, the atmosphere remains subdued in the evening as well. Guests are mainly couples of all ages. As with most properties in Guadeloupe, this hotel tends to attract French-speakers. The owners speak some limited English.

Location

Nondescript location down a winding side street, a five-minute walk from Plage de Petit Havre beach

Cap Sud Caraibes is set down a quiet side street off one of the island’s main highways, N4. It’s about midway between the tourist towns of Gosier and Sainte Anne, which are both located less than a 15-minute drive away. For those with a rental car, it’s a central location for exploring Grande-Terre; however, there are few attractions, restaurants, and other amenities accessible on foot. Those relying on walking are likely to find the location a bit remote. Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport is just under a 30-minute drive away.

Plage de Petit Havre beach is less than a five-minute walk from the hotel. This powdery-sand beach is popular with locals and fisherman. There’s a small shack selling snacks and drinks on the main beach, and several small coves protected by offshore reefs.

Rooms

Homey rooms include mini-fridges and coffeemakers

Guest rooms at Cap Sud Caraibes are individually decorated, and no two are exactly alike. One room has a nautical theme, decorated with life-preserver knickknacks and marine artwork, while another is furnished floor-to-ceiling in tones of blue. Most have slightly mismatched furniture, with painted-wood pieces paired with natural woods and wicker. All have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi (which can be spotty). Coffeemakers and mini-fridges are also standard, with most rooms also including large wardrobes for storage. Some have furnished balconies or terraces with views of the grounds. In upper-floor rooms, the sea is visible in the distance along with the nearby islands of Marie Galante and Les Saintes. There is one room that fits up to four guests, and another that sleeps three guests. The remaining six rooms each fit two guests.

In many rooms, the bathroom is separated from the rest of the room by just a curtain. There’s a significant variation in bathroom size. Some are large -- the mini-fridge, wardrobe, and coffeemaker are somewhat awkwardly set in one -- while others are fairly cramped. Most have pedestal sinks, and some have shower/tub combos while others have showers only. Many do not have shower curtains. Towels and off-brand bars of soap are provided.

Features

Attractive rectangular pool and free continental breakfast

Features at Cap Sud Caraibes are limited, but they're not without their appeal. The property has a lovely outdoor pool surrounded by a concrete deck with a few plastic loungers and wooden patio tables. Colorful beach umbrellas offer shade.

The pool is overlooked by a large, breezy hut, where a free continental breakfast is served each morning. The spread is simple and light: baguettes, jam, juice, and coffee. Throughout the day, the hut acts as a common space with lots of comfy seating for guests looking to relax out of the sun for a while.

Another bright common area on the upper level of the guest-room building has a nice view of the sea. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and there’s limited free parking on the street in front of the property.
