Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile

The luxurious 415-room Sofitel Chicago, two blocks from the Magnificent Mile, is noteworthy for its big, bright rooms; excellent service; and sleek French restaurant and wine/cocktail bar. It’s a haven for business travelers, with plush white beds, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers in the rooms, and several facilities — fitness center, business center, and room service — available around-the-clock. For a nearby business hotel that’s a notch less luxurious but notably more modern, there’s the Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile, which was extensively renovated in 2015.

Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco

The Four Seasons’ huge, well-outfitted rooms and attentive service are among the city’s best, but the 277-room property falls a bit short of expectations. Its pool and fitness center are outsourced, and its business-centric SoMa location lacks the prestige of Nob Hill, where some if its strongest competitors reside.

W South Beach

The W South Beach is a trendy, luxury hotel with a sophisticated look and relaxed atmosphere popular with young professionals and families. The 401 rooms and suites are massive and stylish, featuring minibars, furnished balconies, and Bliss products, although the wear and tear can take away from the overall high-end feeling. Suite have extra perks, small kitchenettes, and plunge pools. The pool and beach areas are favorites, but expect loud music at the former and occasionally, too few loungers. Free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym, small spa, and tasty on-site restaurants are convenient. For a bigger pool and less lively atmosphere, consider the nearby 1 Hotel South Beach.

Fisher Island Hotel & Resort

The luxury Fisher Island Hotel & Resort is situated on an exclusive private island originally built in 1925 by William Vanderbilt II as a winter estate. It’s accessible only by boat or seaplane, just off the coast of mainland Miami. Guests arrive via a free 24-hour ferry ride that takes 10 minutes at sea. There are 15 rooms, cottages, and villas, all with elegant decor and many with their own private hot tubs. Amenities include multiple bars and restaurants that range from casual to snazzy, along with a huge fitness center, beach with white sand imported from the Bahamas, a luxe spa, and several pools. Travelers who prefer not to be on a private island (or pay a triple-digit daily resort fee) should know that The Setai in South Beach comes fairly close.

Four Seasons Hotel Boston

One of the city’s top hotels, the Four Seasons offers unrivaled service, a great health club with a beautiful pool, an iconic restaurant, and a Public Garden-facing location. The 272 rooms are comfortable and understatedly luxurious; their traditional decor may seem dated, but all of the rooms are scheduled to be renovated in 2017 (the beautiful marble bathrooms, some with separate rainfall showers and soaking tubs, were all renovated in 2015). Luxury travelers willing to swap a pool for a spa should consider Mandarin Oriental Boston, which houses a 16,000-square-foot award-winning spa (but lacks a pool).

Vdara Hotel & Spa at ARIA Las Vegas

Vdara is one of three sleek hotels in the new City Center complex, an $11 billion mega development a few blocks from The Strip. It’s a modern, sumptuous hotel with impressive rooms (they’re all suites), a lobby bar, and a decent pool. But the quiet atmosphere isn’t for everyone, so those who want to be in the heart of the Vegas action should stay elsewhere.

Trump International Hotel and Tower New York

Trump International Hotel and Tower is a 52-story luxury property that looms large over the Southwestern corner of Central Park. The walkable location is ideal for those who want to shop at neighboring Columbus Circle or see shows at nearby Lincoln Center. The hotel is home to the world famous Jean-Georges restaurant, and also offers more casual dining at Nougatine and on a seasonal terrace. There’s an indoor lap pool and a modern fitness center. The 176 guest rooms include floor-to-ceiling windows, 55-inch flat-screen TVs, and kitchenettes (in most). However, not all rooms have great views and past guests have complained that the property feels more like a luxury condo building than a hotel. As an alternative, rates are comparable at the more classic JW Marriott Essex House New York and it often has a celebrity clientele.

Tortuga Bay Hotel

In Punta Cana, it’s almost impossible to rival the five-pearl Tortuga Bay Hotel for sheer luxury, VIP treatment, and boutique intimacy. The Oscar de la Renta (a locally legend, born in nearby Santo Domingo) designed property offers some of the chicest lodging on the entire island. Every amenity — including Bamboo restaurant, the white-sand beach, free airport transfers and expedited immigration service, and Six Senses Spa — is world-class. The 30 spacious and sophisticated suites are luxuriously appointed with jetted tubs, beautiful bathrooms, private butler service, and ocean-view balconies/terraces. Cruiser bikes and golf carts come with each suite. If guests are going to balk at anything here, it’s likely to be the price and lack of evening entertainment. Although it lacks the same sophistication, The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club offers a similar location and amenities on an adjacent beach — for lower rates.

The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Boston

Occupying a former jail, the 298-room Liberty Hotel is a unique luxury property with a hip atmosphere and a playful design that honors the building’s rich history. Rooms are stylish and elegant, with tons of interesting decorative elements that incorporate the incarceration theme, and upscale bathrooms with separate rain showers and soaking tubs. The stunning lobby is a popular hangout spot for afterwork drinks, and Scampo is known for its wonderful Italian cuisine and chic interiors. The Liberty is popular with couples, and also draws many business travelers with over 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, 24-hour business and fitness centers, and lots of wonderful dining and drinking options on-site. The location in Beacon Hill is convenient for shopping, dining, and hospitals, but most major tourist attractions are at least a 15-minute T ride away. Families may want to compare rates at Hotel Marlowe.
