The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park

The Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park is a classic luxury hotel that sits directly across from Central Park, on Central Park South, in an area teeming with upscale restaurants and shops. The 259 guest rooms and suites are spacious and elegantly decorated, many feature views of Central Park. Some rooms come with Club Lounge access and butler service is available for a fee. Auden Bistro offers pre- and post-theater menus, and cocktails and afternoon tea can be had at the glamorous Star Lounge. There’s no pool, but La Prairie Spa and a modern fitness center offer luxe places to relax and work out. Another five-pearl option is the nearby St. Regis New York. It has a snazzier look and free butler service, but is four blocks from Central Park.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort

The Kahala Hotel and Resort is a five-pearl oceanfront property with a star-studded history and lush, sprawling grounds 15 minutes outside of Waikiki. The 338 tasteful rooms and suites have luxe, earth-toned interiors and floor-to-ceiling windows, flat-screen TVs, and huge granite-accented bathrooms with soaking tubs. Kahala’s four pricey (but tasty) restaurants serve Asian fusion, Italian, and international cuisines. Along with a small, serene beach there’s a busy communal pool, kids’ pool, and a hot tub. The hotel also has an interactive swim-with-the dolphins experience. Hotel freebies include surfing and stand-up paddle board lessons, bike rentals, a huge gym, and shuttle service. For an oceanfront stay in central Waikiki with elegant rooms, multiple restaurants, and an uncrowded beach, it’s worth comparing rates at The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Resort.

Half Moon

Half Moon is a luxury oceanfront property with two beautiful beaches outside of Montego Bay. Its 388 air-conditioned rooms are a mix of modern and traditionally-decorated units with living areas, extensive minibars, and flat-screen TVs. Private balconies have ocean, pool, or garden views, and multi-bedroom villas include perks like cooks and butlers. This sprawling resort has tons of amenities including a huge spa, three tasty — yet pricy — restaurants, multiple pools, free tennis courts, a kids’ club, and a massive gym. At this price point, the hotel has surprising few freebies, and most guests opt for all-inclusive rates as pay-as-you-go prices are sky high. For a more family-friendly oceanfront all-inclusive that includes extras like an adventure park, its worth pricing out Melia Braco Village instead.

Greenwich Hotel

This virtually flawless 88-room TriBeCa hotel (opened in 2008 by Robert de Niro, among others) offers large, homey rooms, breathtaking design, and very attentive service. Even better: free Wi-Fi; free minibar snacks; and free Wii video games by request. Better still: an underground pool; Shibui Spa; premier gym; and the homestyle Italian Locanda Verde restaurant.

The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes

Midway between Universal Studios and Disney World, The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes is one of few five-pearl properties in Orlando. Its 582 rooms and suites are stylishly decorated and outfitted with luxe amenities, and the hotel is packed with great features. Families can take advantage of the gorgeous pool, outdoor kids’ splash zone, and the Ritz Kids club, while couples and business travelers can check out the spa, modern fitness center, and 18-hole golf course. Four excellent dining options appeal to all kinds of travelers, and the adjoining JW Marriott’s amenities are free to use. The Ritz isn’t affiliated with any nearby theme parks, which may not be ideal for families. The Four Seasons Resort Orlando is located within Walt Disney World, and offers Disney related perks, but rates are pricier.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

The Grande Dame of Disney, the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, is a Victorian stunner that pays homage to the Atlantic coast’s golden era. With gorgeous architecture, meticulously kept grounds, and a multi-story lobby with turn-of-the-century grandeur, this luxury property is a destination all its own. The resort’s two pools, on-site monorail and boat transportation, and firework-view rooms are great for families, but the hotel also appeals to adults with its Senses Spa and high-end on-site dining. The 867 guest rooms are elegantly decorated, but they don’t feel incredibly luxurious, especially when considering the hotel’s exorbitant nightly rates. For a comparable price, the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort is a truly luxurious experience, though it’s farther from the Magic Kingdom.

The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

Forget gilded mirrors. The 86-room Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, housed in an historic industrial building, has the original brick and steel beams and a cozy slate fireplace in the lobby. But its aesthetic allure drops off from there. Service is excellent and its central Georgetown location is superb, but rooms are dull and the gym is disappointingly small.

The Wagner at the Battery

Formerly a Ritz-Carlton, The Wagner at the Battery features gorgeous rooms, top-notch service, and a premier gym and spa. “Battery Park” tells you you’re in for a lower-key New York experience, with Lower Manhattan’s quiet nights, cobblestone streets, and — best of all — rates often lower than luxury properties in town.

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel

The Carlyle has been a historic and discreet host to artists, presidents, and local and international celebrities since 1930, and it’s traditional to the core: White-gloved elevator operators, a special concierge vestibule, the classic Bemelman’s Bar, and dinner performances by Judy Collins and Woody Allen (playing jazz clarinet) are hallmarks of this classic American hotel. More intimate, with bigger rooms, than the competing Waldorf-Astoria and Loews Regency.

Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa

Especially popular among families, the modern, 816-room Red Rock is great for travelers who want a self-contained Vegas resort experience. Nearly 30 minutes from the frenzy of the Strip, this desert oasis nonetheless offers Vegas-level glamour — it boasts snazzy rooms, an impressive pool complex, a renowned spa, 10 restaurants, 10 bars and lounges, a multiplex movie theater, and a 72-lane bowling alley. The resort has smaller crowds and more space than the crowded Strip mega-hotels, plus it is in the middle of the natural beauty of Red Rock Canyon. The JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort Spa and Golf is a luxury off-the-Strip pick with a much quieter atmosphere, but far fewer dining options.
