The Mercer Hotel

The Mercer is a luxury boutique hotel with one of the buzziest and best locations in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood. It caters to discerning travelers and celebrities (and their dogs) who require personalized service and demand discretion. The landmark Romanesque Revival building holds 75 loft-like guest rooms with Swedish toiletries, luxe minibars, and 11-foot high ceilings. Food and late-night beverage service in the stylish lobby is supplied by Mercer Kitchen, the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant run by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Guests are given free passes to the swanky Equinox gym down the street. As of 2017, smoking was still allowed in all rooms — which might be a dealbreaker for some. As an alternative, Robert DeNiro’s The Greenwich Hotel in TriBeCa has an underground pool, full fitness center, and non-smoking rooms.

The Mark

The Mark, a historic hotel built in 1927, re-opened in 2009 as one of the best contemporary luxury hotels in New York and has stayed high on the list of scenester Manhattan hotels since — not an easy feat for an Upper East Side location. The hotel’s stunning interiors by France’s premier designer, Jacques Grange, are colorful and bold rather than gilded and stuffy. There’s a restaurant, bar, and room service by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, one of New York’s most famous chefs. The 152 comfortable, high-tech rooms and personalized service draw celebrities getting ready for the Met Gala, while the location one block from Central Park and a partnership with Bergdorf Goodman draws fashionable tourists. Fabulous four-legged friends are welcome at no extra charge. Travelers who prefer a downtown address should check rates at Robert DeNiro’s Greenwich Hotel in TriBeCa.

Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square

Luxury vacation rental meets upscale hotel at the city’s best, if most expensive, residence-style lodging. The Ghirardelli Square factory setting has plenty of character, and 53 modern one-, two-, and three-bedroom units feel like designer model homes with fireplaces, full kitchens, and top-of-the-line amenities. Personal grocery shopping, 24-hour butlers, and free breakfasts are among service highlights, though there’s not much here in terms of features save for a fitness room and large terrace with fire pits and great views over the bay. Travelers searching for a similarly luxurious hotel with more facilities could look into the St. Regis San Francisco, which has two restaurants, a pool, and a spa, plus it’s close to Union Square — but rooms don’t have kitchens.

Caneel Bay Resort

This hotel was significantly impacted by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and is currently closed for repairs until 2019. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. Built from a historic sugar plantation, this profoundly serene 166-room resort sits on 170 acres of a protected national park dotted with seven remote beaches. Even with a quaint pool and rustic rooms that lack TVs and phones, Caneel’s attentive service and unparalleled setting make it one of the Caribbean’s best resorts.

Mondrian South Beach Hotel

The stylish, off-the-beach Mondrian South Beach may lack the hyped-up clubber-clientele of its South Beach siblings, the Delano and Shore Club, but its still a party-centric pick. Its 335 rooms have modern beach-house-meets-nightclub decor, kitchenettes, and bathrooms with beautifully tiled rainfall showers and Malin + Goetz beauty products. The indoor/indoor Mondrian Bar and weekend pool parties draw well-heeled singles. Dream South Beach is a similarly hip party hotel on the other side of South Beach — literally a one-minute walk from the beach.

The London NYC

The stylish, all-suite hotel is one of the best luxury deals around. Its huge, 500-square-foot suites are double the size of many New York City hotel rooms and have a young, fun vibe due to modish furniture and decor. Despite having 562 rooms and 54 floors, the London NYC feels a bit like a boutique hotel, with its chic bar, friendly service, and well-equipped fitness center with lots of natural light. All that’s missing is an on-site spa; travelers requiring one might consider Le Parker Meridien.

The Surrey

The Surrey is one of the most understated and luxurious hotels in Manhattan. The unassuming facade on a mostly residential (and very posh) Upper East Side street is just one block from Central Park and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Inside, the sophisticated lobby sports enormous tapestries of celebrities like Kate Moss. Celebrity chef Daniel Boulud’s Cafe Boulud and Chanel-inspired Bar Pleiades are open to the public, but only guests get access to the seasonal 17th floor rooftop garden and bar. The 190 rooms and suites are tastefully decorated and include ultra-luxe extras like custom mattresses and Diptyque toiletries. The most common gripe is connectivity issues with the free Wi-Fi. As a nearby luxury alternative, The Mark has a slightly more casual vibe beloved by celebrities and a restaurant by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

Omni Orlando Resort at Championsgate

Located 10 miles south of Disney World, the Omni is an excellent destination resort with attentive service, five well-designed pools including an adults-only pool, lazy river, and waterslide, three golf courses, organized kids’ activities, and solid restaurants. Most of its 862 guest rooms and suites lack the kitchens found at the sprawling Reunion resort nearby, but the Omni’s grounds are more walkable.

Four Seasons Hotel New York

The Midtown outpost of this four-and-a-half-pearl hotel remains a mainstay for travelers loyal to the brand, but it has some quirks and drawbacks that should be noted. A bold statement is made from the start, with grandiose interiors designed by I.M. Pei, yet beyond the marble-clad lobby, Four Seasons New York delivers an abbreviated version of a luxury hotel experience. Features check high-end boxes — there’s a bar with top-notch cocktails and 24-hour room service — but the hotel lacks a dinner restaurant, the spa and small gym are in the basement, and there’s no pool. Its 368 spacious guest rooms and suites are sophisticated and comfortably staid, with custom-made furniture, minibars, and bathrobes, though high-end amenities like espresso machines and iPod docks are missing. Travelers looking for a step up in features can try The St. Regis New York.

Crosby Street Hotel

The Crosby Street Hotel is a hip, luxury boutique property that caters to fashionable tourists and business travelers, unsurprising given its prime SoHo location. The 86 rooms and suites feature colorful, beautifully put-together decor and stand-out marble bathrooms, and all have big floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of natural light. Facilities are equally lovely, with lots of art-filled common areas, a few small meeting rooms, and a 99-seat private movie theater. The on-site restaurant, the Crosby Bar, sources much of its ingredients (including spices and fresh eggs) from the hotel’s rooftop garden. Overall, it’s one of the lovelier choices in SoHo, but travelers who absolutely must have a pool are better off at The James New York – SoHo, which has a rooftop pool.
