The hotel’s decor recalls the Belle Epoque of the early 20th century, with large stained-glass windows, chandeliers, and terrazzo flooring with beautiful mosaics. It is simple, historic, and homey, so travelers shouldn’t expect much in the way of luxury at this two-pearl property.

The Hotel Villa Centa is perched on the hillside behind the small Church of Santa Caterina, the patron of Varazze. It is a little removed from the center of town, though still a convenient 15-minute walk. It’s about a half-hour drive to Genoa and approximately two hours by car to Monte Carlo, depending on traffic.

The 17 rooms are a bit old-fashioned and simply decorated, with terrazzo flooring, plain hotel-style bedspreads, simple -- but colorful -- wood furniture, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms are a little cramped, with tiny stall showers and soap dispensers, which cheapen the atmosphere a tad. All rooms offer sea views. Those travelers who are accustomed to air-conditioning should take note that the rooms are not air-conditioned. Upgrading to one of the two-bedroom apartments will get you air-conditioning, kitchens, and terraces.

Aside from the Mediterranean cuisine and breakfast served in the hotel’s well-regarded restaurant, the hotel also offers free bicycles and scooter rentals, as well as loaner games and toys for children. A big plus is the rooftop solarium with panoramic views of the gulf. There is also a small library that offers DVDs.
