The Sunwing Resort & Spa is a modern property made up of several three-story white buildings with dark wood balconies. Set on Bang Tao Beach, and landscaped with palm trees and lush plants, the property has a suitably slow-paced, relaxed vibe. Inside the modern lobby, high ceilings, blue tile walls, and oversize white lamps are an elegant counterpoint to the casually dressed guests -- including many families with small children. Off the lobby, wood bench seats with colorful cushions face a small fountain and gardens. Stone pathways wind past well-kept lawns, and a small soccer field and volleyball court. The poolside Lime Bar -- decorated with white and blue tile, lime green lamps, and simple wood and metal bar stools -- hosts evening entertainment for guests.

The resort is located on the west side of Phuket Island on Bang Tao Beach, complete with white sand and turquoise water. During high season, staring in December, the ocean is beautiful and great for swimming -- but dangerous riptides and currents arise during low season. The hotel itself sits on a small but busy street dotted with restaurants and shops, and is about a 15-minute drive from Kamala Beach. Patong and Downtown Phuket, both with dining and entertainment options, are each about a 25- to 30-minute drive from the resort. Phuket International Airport is about 27 minutes away by car.

The hotel offers four types of Studios and two varieties of Family Suites with separate bedrooms. All include balconies or terraces, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning; all have kitchenettes except Happy Baby Studios, which come with a slew of extras like a stroller, high-chair, and baby bathtub. Rooms are airy and bright, with tile floors, warm wood closets and furniture, and crisp white linens complemented with gingham throws and striped curtains. Bathrooms have glass-door stall showers and wood cabinetry. Kimonos or bathrobes are provided for guest use in all rooms. Some rooms feel more worn, and have a slightly musty smell.

The resort offers six pools: four large pools (including one with an island, and one for sports) and two pools just for kids (including one with small slide), all surrounded by wood lounge chairs, tall palm trees, and neatly kept gardens. Day and evening children's activities, like magic shows and discos, are provided. The MiniLand games area has ping pong tables, and there's also a sandy outdoor playground. The spa offers massages using the resort's signature oil made with natural Thai ingredients, and the modern gym has plenty of space and cardio machines. La Tasca restaurant serves Thai dishes and family-friendly fare (burgers, pizza) for lunch and dinner in a casual setting; takeaway is available. Fino Restaurant and Grill is a more upscale dinner option, and Lime Bar by the pool offers indoor and outdoor seating. Daily breakfast is free, but gets mixed reviews. Kids under 12 eat free when dining with adults.
