If the timber framing, plaster facade, and the windmill outside the Kronborg Inn don't give it away, the Danish flag flying outside should indicate the hotel's intention to give guests a little taste of Denmark. Renovated by new owners in 2014, the intimate inn is geared toward weekending couples and leisure travelers, with old pine trees shading its exterior walkways and postcard-worthy views of the surrounding countryside visible from throughout the grounds. The bright, airy lobby has a partially lofted ceiling, and is decorated with stylized modern decor, including Louis XVI chairs around glass tables, oversized black Chesterfield chairs, topiaries and orchids, wrought-iron chandeliers, and a waterfall feature on one stone wall. The outdoor pool deck is less elegant, but the umbrella-shaded white plastic chairs, flanked by palm trees, have a cool mid-century effect.

Right on the main street of the charming wine country village of Solvang, the Kronborg Inn is ideally located for strolling among the town’s wine tasting rooms, pastry shops, Christmas boutiques, and galleries. Those seeking a relaxed, pedestrian-friendly spot will enjoy wandering the area, sampling local foods and wines. Alisal Golf Course is three miles away, Santa Ynez Winery is a five-mile drive from the hotel, and the Chumash Casino is seven minutes by car. The Hans Christian Anderson Museum and Park and other cultural attractions are all within a few minutes.

Each of the inn's 38 rooms has a contemporary brown-and-gray color palette, which, when paired with dark wood furniture, can be a bit dark. Granite-topped tables and dressers are a bit dated, but still fit into the overall decor, with boldly patterned statement curtains drawing most of the attention. Layouts vary and upper-floor rooms have vaulted ceilings as well as private balconies, while bottom-floor rooms have small patios (which are less private). All rooms have big flat-screen TVs with DVD players, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. The tiled bathrooms have updated fixtures and jetted shower/tub combinations. Suites have private whirlpool tubs and walk-in rainfall showers.

The hotel is built around an outdoor pool with a quiet sun deck that lacks for sun bathing space, but has several sets of umbrella-shaded chairs. A separate, but adjoining area has a few sun loungers and a hot tub. The small spa next to the pool has a single treatment room with the usual range of massages and facials. The breakfast room spills out onto the pool area with some outdoor seating, and the included continental breakfast includes various breads, a bowl of hard boiled eggs, cereal, juice, coffee, and a pair of waffle makers.
