The Lavanga Resort & Spa’s appeal is its lovely location along a golden-sand beach in southern Sri Lanka. It's a bit outside the tourist center of Hikkaduwa, which may be a downside for those looking to dine at its restaurants, though it affords a peaceful atmosphere. Mostly families come here, plus a good deal of couples, attracted by the many on-site features. Most guests tend to congregate around the ocean-view pool, but a kiddy area, spa, and fifth-floor bar are also utilized. While most furnishings are contemporary -- think lots of polished marble, modern wicker seating, and up-to-date technology -- some decor is on the dated side or showing wear. In particular, an older-looking gym, old-fashioned patterned couch upholstery and bed runners, and loud red carpet in the event space need a refresh. Nevertheless, this is a decent pick for the affordable price, but hotels such as Citrus Hikkaduwa offer a better value.

This property is located on a main road, a five-minute drive outside the center of Hikkaduwa. There are a few restaurants and bars in the immediate surrounds, but more are location in the town center. The well-known cities of Galle and Unawatuna are 30-minute drives away, while the capital of Colombo is two hours by car. The main Bandaranaike International Airport is slightly farther. Tuk-tuks are a popular way to get around, and they're generally stationed at the front of the hotel. On-site parking is free. 

Rooms are spacious and largely contemporary, outfitted with dark wood and rattan furniture, marble floors with palm frond-patterned rugs, old-fashioned blue patterned bed runners and throw pillows, and quaint murals of local scenery above the beds -- think elephants or the beach. While most have furnished balconies, not all do, and most past guests agree it's worth ensuring a room with an outdoor space. Some units have ocean views. All feature air-conditioning, sitting areas, flat-screen TVs with cable channels, and free Wi-Fi, while some also have safes, minibars, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Sleek beige bathrooms have marble vanities, good-sized showers, an array of toiletries, bathrobes, and hairdryers. Meanwhile, Two Bedroom Family Suites are available, as are two-bedroom Grand Suites with outdoor hot tubs. 

The golden-sand, palm-fringed beach is a popular gathering spot for guests, outfitted with umbrella-shaded loungers. Unfortunately, the sea is often rough and not suitable for swimming. However, the adjacent swimming pool offers an alternative. Overlooking the beach, the pool is well-sized and has cabanas and loungers, some submerged in water. A seasonal pool bar and kids’ pool are also on-site.

The all-day restaurant serves Sri Lankan and international dishes, consisting of buffet-style breakfasts and dinners, and a la carte lunches. A connected patisserie offers pastries, cakes, and fresh juices. Additionally, Sky Bar offers panoramic ocean views and cocktails from a fifth-floor balcony. 

A spa is decorated with Sri Lankan-themed wall murals, and a range of treatments are on offer. A small marine-themed fitness center has older-looking cardio equipment and weights. The resort’s 50-seat mini-cinema is open 24/7, and there's a kids' play space that hosts indoor and outdoor activities. The Lavanga Water Sports Center offers a range of water-based activities for a fee. A souvenir shop and 250-person banquet space are available as well.
