Bottom Line

Part of the popular worldwide ibis budget chain, this two-pearl hotel is located in Tokyo's busy Shinjuku district, popular with locals and visitors for its shopping and night spots, and its excellent transportation links: The subway and the local train station are a few minutes' walk from the hotel. The 206 rooms are on the small side, but they're clean and include such amenities as flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and electric kettles. A breakfast buffet is served at the on-site cafe for an extra fee, and paid parking is available on-site. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Travelers could also compare rates with the nearby Hotel Sunroute Higashi Shinjuku, which has two restaurants and rooms with city views.

ibis Tokyo Shinjuku

Scene

Bright, modern interiors with open public spaces

Ibis Tokyo Shinjuku is located on a busy Tokyo street that gets lots of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Housed in a mid-rise building with a red-brick facade, the hotel is sandwiched between other buildings in Shinjuku's business district. The lobby area is bright and modern, with colorful accents. Floors are tiled in contrasting white-and-gray tones, and bright red sofas pop next to white and pale blue Eames chairs. The lobby has a cafe, which contributes to the casual and convivial ambience. This hotel is popular with solo travelers, but many couples and families check in here too.

Rooms

Small but clean rooms with Japanese-style bathrooms

The 206 rooms at ibis Tokyo Shinjuku are clean and decorated simply, but be aware that not all have windows. Dark-patterned carpeting covers the floors, while white walls are offset by orange accent walls, which brighten the space along with monochrome photographs. Large mirrors above the desks work to make the rooms seem larger. Standard Single Rooms measure 129 square feet, while the Superior Double Rooms, at 215 square feet, are roomier and include loveseats and tables. All rooms are air-conditioned and include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, electric kettles, hairdryers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are Japanese-style, fitted with electronic toilets, plastic sink tops, and small shower/tub combos with handheld showerheads. Slippers, hairdryers, and toiletries are also provided.

Be aware that guests have complained about nonsmoking rooms smelling of stale smoke, the lack of temperature control, and dated decor in some of the rooms.
