Bottom Line

The 16-room Bed & Venice is a centrally located budget hostel with clean, sparse rooms, limited extra features, and accordingly low rates. Private and dorm rooms for two to six people are available, although all share bathrooms. While furnishings may be dated, the hostel is clean and functional. The property has common lounge space in the lobby, a 24-hour reception desk with helpful staff, a large terrace with excellent city views, and a breakfast room that serves a free basic breakfast. The Hotel Al Vagon is a comparable budget property for guests who would prefer private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, though the hotel doesn't serve breakfast.

Bed & Venice

Scene

Clean, basic hostel situated in a historic building

Bed & Venice is situated in a historic building in part of a complex that was once the Pieta convent, orphanage, and conservatory. Vivaldi taught violin and viola here, and Vivaldi Church, a one-minute walk from the hostel, still holds performances of the composer's music. The hostel itself is sparse and simple, with speckled tiled floors, white walls, and wood window frames and doors. The clean lobby is a wide, well-lit hallway with several grouped sitting areas with couches and armchairs covered in dated, well-used mint green-and-white striped fabric. There's also a spacious outdoor terrace with great rooftop city views and a pleasant attic breakfast room with wooden floors and wood-beam ceilings. While this is certainly not a party hostel, it does tend to attract younger budget travelers who don't mind sharing rooms.

Location

In central Venice, a seven-minute walk from St. Mark's Square

Bed & Venice is situated on a quiet side street in the Castello district near the heart of Venice, about a seven-minute walk from St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) and a 15-minute walk from the Rialto Bridge. While set slightly away from the tourist center in a more residential area, the hostel is in easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, cafes, and sights. A water bus stop is just a two-minute walk away and the hostel is part of a complex that includes Vivaldi Church's, a one-minute walk away. Marco Polo Airport is an hour away by water bus and getting to the Venezia Santa Lucia train terminal takes under a half hour.

Rooms

Clean but sparse shared and private rooms with AC -- but no en-suite bathrooms

Rooms at Bed & Venice are spacious but sparse, with twin beds situated in two- to six-person rooms, which can be booked for private groups, plus typical dorm-style hostel arrangements. Rooms have tiled floors, white walls, and plain wood furniture. All rooms include satellite TVs, and air-conditioning, and most have extra furniture pieces such as nightstands or desks, chairs, or wardrobes. Sheets and towels are provided. Some rooms have views of the Grand Canal or a side canal, and though rooms don't get much street noise, the shared hostel atmosphere can sometimes attract groups, which can be noisy. There are no en-suite bathrooms, but rather a mixture of single and multi-stall bathrooms with beige tiles and walk-in showers or shower/tub combos. While bathrooms and rooms are simple and show signs of wear-and-tear, they are clean and functional.

Features

Outdoor terrace with city views, basic free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi

While the hostel has few extra property features, it does have common areas for guests to hang out. In addition to the lobby, there's a large rooftop terrace with exceptional 360-degree views of the city's rooftops. Breakfast is served here in the summer or in a pleasant attic breakfast room during colder months. The breakfast is free, but basic, with just coffee, tea, hot chocolate, bread, and cereal -- and second servings cost a small extra fee. The reception area is open 24-hours and offers cold drinks for sale; it also has a computer and printer. Staff can assist with navigating the city or offer recommendations. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
