The Hotel Ananas is the largest outpost of the Austria Trend hotel chain and occupies a simple but imposing corner building that first opened its doors in 1987. There are, however, hints of Art Deco (or, in Austria, Jugendstil) styles in the architecture and throughout the hotel lobby, which is awash in gray marble, signature red furnishings, and polished chrome details, all illuminated by turn-of-the-century-style sconces.  A trio of elevators transport guests to one of eight floors, where the elegant early-20th-century styling is replaced with rather drab and dated interiors more in line with the hotels late-80s heritage. The restaurant unfortunately channels more of the late-80s, and is a relatively quiet scene. The hotel predominantly attracts business travelers and visitors less interested in tourist sights, or who prefer a good value accommodation to a central location.

The hotel is location is a largely residential neighborhood in the Margareten district just south of Vienna's center. While the main tourist attractions are barely within walking distance, the Pilgramgasse metro stop is essentially across the street and connects you to the central transport hub of Karlsplatz and all the major sights. There are plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance, and the shopping area of Mariahilfer Strasse and Vienna's most popular market, Naschmarkt, are both within 15 minutes on foot. Wien Westbahnhof, one of the city's main train terminal's is less than 10 minutes away by car, while Vienna's International Airport is around 25 minutes away.

The hotel has a whopping 522 rooms spread out over its eight floors, all of which are simply styled with light-wood paneling, traditional patterned fabrics, and sound-reducing parquet floors. While most rooms feel clean and modern enough, if a bit bland, some have yet to be renovated and feel dated with signs of wear. Free Wi-Fi extends to all rooms and flat-screen TVs, a pillow menu, and minibars (with just water) come standard. Bathrooms are modern and clean, with wall-mounted hairdryers and soap dispensers. While windows are sound-proofed, street-facing rooms get some traffic noise -- higher-floor and courtyard-facing rooms are quieter.

The hotel serves hot and cold breakfast buffet each morning with freshly baked pastries and organic coffee -- however it's not generally included in the rate. Its Johann Strauss café-bar offers a menu of traditional Viennese coffee house culture -- if not the ambience -- while the restaurant serves a selection of regional specialties for lunch and dinner. Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the hotel, while underneath is a secure parking garage for up to 35 cars (for a fee). The hotel also has meeting and event spaces.
