Bottom Line
Yosemite's Big Tree Lodge is not only one of the oldest mountain resorts in California, but is also a National Historic Landmark. Located between the Mariposa Groves and tourist hot spot Yosemite Valley, the hotel occupies its own patch of secluded property of streams and forest. This Victorian-style property was built in 1876 and is filled with classic period pieces, portraits, patterned wallpaper, and genuine antiques. Rooms are cozy and charming, though 50 of the hotel's 104 rooms lack private baths. Staying true to its roots, the hotel has no phones or TVs, but it does offer Wi-Fi in a few common areas. There is just one dining option on-site -- where evenings include live piano music -- and Yosemite Valley is a 45-minute drive away.

Mariposa Grove is located in the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park and contains the largest grove of Giant Sequoias. In fact, two of the sequoias are among the largest in the world. One of them, named Grizzly Giant, is over 200 feet tall and is said to be at least 1,900 years old. Yosemite Valley is known for its lush forests, crystal-clear streams, and popular summits El Capitan and Half Dome. It is considered the main attraction of Yosemite National Park and has many visitor facilities within its boundaries.
The national park encompasses over 700,000 acres across east central California and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, it draws millions of visitors each year to its majestic cliffs, waterfalls, and canyons. From hiking and biking to climbing and skiing, tourists can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities in America’s third-oldest national park.
