Bottom Line

On the northern end of town, the mid-range Mercure Chiang Mai features modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, writing desks, and Thai decor features. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are free, and there's a decent-size pool with a bar, a restaurant, a nighttime beer terrace, and excellent conference facilities. Rates are reasonable, but the hotel is removed from the tourist areas, and getting to town takes at least 10 minutes by taxi.

Mercure Chiang Mai

Scene

Mid-range business chain hotel that also attracts some budget-conscious vacationers

The Mercure Chiang Mai sees a range of guests, and while business travelers are the main demographic, it also attracts leisure travelers in search of a reasonably priced stay away from the crowds of the Old City and downtown. Common areas include an outdoor beer terrace that's lit up and at night. The lobby has tiled floors and some wood panelling on the walls, and potted plants and elaborate flower arrangements brighten the space up a bit.

Location

Outside of the tourist zones, a 10- to 15-minute drive to most sights

The Mercure Chiang Mai is on the northern side of Chiang Mai, removed from the Old City and downtown. It's no more than about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi to most of the main attractions. There are some restaurants and drinking spots in the neighborhood, plus a Tops Supermarket just next to the hotel, but most of the popular eating and drinking spots are in town. The airport is a 12-minute drive away.

Rooms

Variety of room types, all with writing desks and flat-screen TVs

The rooms at the Mercure Chiang Mai are spacious and have either one king or two twin beds and come furnished with tables, chairs, writing desks, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Standard Rooms lack safes but have shower/tub combos, while higher categories have flat-screen TVs. The Deluxe Rooms are especially nice, with 32-inch flat-screen TVs and higher quality mattresses than in the Standards. Views are nothing special.

Features

Large-ish pool, beer terrace open at night, abundant meeting and event facilities

While the Mercure Chiang Mai does not have a fitness center, it is equipped with most other features standard to a larger business hotel. There is a good-size outdoor pool, although it's positioned in such a way that it only gets sunlight on part of its surface. There's also a poolside bar and a second bar in the lobby. The Citrus Restaurant serves free buffet breakfasts and then lunch and dinner on some days, and there's a new beer terrace out front serving up pints in the evenings. The hotel has a huge ballroom and several abundant meeting rooms, making it a good choice for weddings, conferences, or other large group events.
