Bottom Line

The 50-room Hotel de Bangkok is a small budget property that's a 15-minute walk from Baiyoke Tower and the Pratunam Market shopping area. On a quiet side street, this hotel is an easy five-minute walk to the Ratchaprarop Airport Rail Link station, but a hike to most major tourist zones. Rooms here are simple and bright, with modern Thai decor, flat-screen TVs, safes, and mini-fridges plus free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a cozy restaurant for all-day dining and serves a free breakfast with Thai and Western options. For a nearby hotel with more style that's closer to the malls of Chit Lom, check out Budacco, which has quaint boutique rooms at similar rates.

Hotel de Bangkok

Scene

Bright and cheerful budget hotel with charming, homey style

The Hotel de Bangkok is a quiet place, and with few facilities other than its restaurant, most guests are just coming and going from their rooms, and staying here due to the budget-friendly prices and to be outside of the crowds in Bangkok's more touristy areas. The hotel itself is a smart looking low-rise building with just four stories and a white and brown facade facing out into the spacious parking lot -- a rarity in central Bangkok -- where there is also a smoking terrace off to one side. The lobby is very bright, with a white floor and ceiling, plus lots of large windows getting plenty of sun all morning. There are several plush sofas located throughout, a couple of red patterned chairs, and small statues of Siamese cats scattered on tables. Brass and silver orb lights hang from the ceiling, backed by a colonial style shuttered and arched set of door frames, giving the whole lobby a spiffy boutique feel that's charming and homey. All in all, though, this is a simple property, and guests staying here include families and couples from a huge cross section of international destinations.

Location

Near Pratunam Market and Airport Rail Link, but outside of main tourist districts

Hotel de Bangkok is located just north of the Pratunam Market shopping area and the Baiyoke Tower, Bangkok's tallest building, which is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. This is a great location for those who want to spend time shopping in the wholesale markets and accessing the Pratunam district, with lots of Indian and Southeast Asian restaurants. The imediate area is far less crowded than the city's tourist zones, and lacks the subsequent touts or hassles. While the hotel is far from popular tourist haunts like Sukhumvit and Silom -- which are home to upscale and popular restaurants and bars (as well as the seedier sides of the city as well) -- it is still possible to access these places relatively easily. The hotel is a five-minute walk to the Airport Rail Link station at Ratchaprarop, meaning guests can conveniently travel to the airport avoiding traffic, and the rail link intersects with the skytrain in just one stop. Additionally, for those who don't mind a stroll in the Bangkok heat, the closest skytrain station at Victory Monument can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. Trips to Suvarnabhumi Airport only take 30 minutes by using the rail link, while Don Mueang Airport takes 20 minutes to reach by car depending on traffic.

Rooms

Simple and modern rooms with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridge, some with balconies

There are 50 simple rooms at Hotel de Bangkok, and all of them are bright and cheery, with modern Thai decor, orange and green accents, contemporary upholstered chairs, small rugs, and writing desks. Guests have a choice of twin or queen-sized beds in the Standard Rooms, or king-size beds in the Superior and Deluxe. Rooms get plenty of light and have either white-tile or wood floors. All are spacious, with the smallest starting at a generous 24 square meters (258 square feet) and every room has a flat-screen TV, safe, mini-fridge, and an electric kettle for making free tea and coffee. Additionally, all rooms come with free Wi-Fi and free breakfast.

The rooms are all fairly similar and the main differences are in their size, although the Deluxe Rooms do feature an extra bed, making them a good choice for families. Superior Rooms and certain Deluxe Rooms have a pleasant balcony with a table and chairs. None of the rooms have great views, although the Superior Rooms do have balconies. Deluxe Rooms have large windows, and the corner units of the Standard Rooms have both windows facing outwards, plus one small window facing inside the building area. The Superior and Standard Rooms both have shower/tub combos, while the Deluxe comes with the same plus an additional walk-in shower. Bathrooms are tiled and contemporary, with sharp modern fixtures and free toiletries, though we did spot a bit of dirty grout. Wi-Fi is free in guest rooms but can be spotty in certain parts of the hotel.

Features

Free breakfast buffet and restaurant for all-day dining; abundant on-site parking and free Wi-Fi

The Hotel de Bangkok is a small budget property with a limited selection of features to match. Bistro de Bangkok, a cozy restaurant that sits adjacent to the lobby, serves the hotel's free buffet breakfast that includes Thai and Western dishes including eggs, noodles, and fresh fruit. There's an area with tables just behind the lobby, but the main part of the restaurant is far more pleasant and is set out front, with tables and rattan-backed chairs and a lovely corner table with large cushioned chairs overlooking the smoking deck outside. With white floors and plenty of sunshine streaming in, it's a cheery place, and they serve Thai dishes along with a few Western staples throughout the day such as hamburgers and sandwiches to go with coffee drinks, cocktails, beer, and other beverages. There are no other facilities at the hotel other than the plentiful on-site parking, but the hotel does have an outside travel agency that can assist travelers with any type of tour or transport needs. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
