Cons

  • Soundproofing could be better, especially in rooms with connecting doors and those near the front of the hotel, which get traffic noise
  • Parking is off-site, and surrounding-area construction can make it difficult to transport luggage from the parking lot to the hotel
  • Front-facing rooms get some traffic noise

Bottom Line

This mid-range, 354-room chain hotel, in a renovated Art Nouveau building designed around an interior atrium, is within walking distance of the Financial District and the Grand-Place and shopping district of the Rue Neuve, making it a convenient choice for business and leisure travelers. The high-ceilinged, large-windowed rooms are spacious and include small sitting areas, smart TV systems, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi.  The blond wood paneling and laminate built-in furniture are in keeping with the Art Nouveau theme but are somewhat cheap-looking. Suites and Junior Suites are also available. The hotel has a small fitness center with an adjacent dry sauna, a business center, two restaurants, and a bar -- a nice touch in a neighborhood that tends to shut down by mid-evening.

Oyster Hotel Review

Crowne Plaza Hotel Brussels – Le Palace

Scene

Renovated Art Nouveau building

This six-story Art Nouveau building has a glass-and-iron awning that mimics the Art Nouveau style, and a renovated interior that preserves the ceilings’ crown moldings, but some of the interior architectural details, such as lozenge pane windows, change the overall aesthetic to dated clubby corporate. An LED-illuminated front desk keeps oranges and water on-hand for runners circling the nearby Jardin Botanique, and there's a small wall-inset snack bar right inside the revolving glass door entrance for those on the run. A mosaic-tiled lounge with wraparound silver vinyl couches provides a place to relax at the base of the atrium.

Location

A five-minute walk to the Rue Neuve and near the edge of the Leopold Quarter, the main financial district of Brussels

Situated on the corner of Boulevard du Jardin Botanique/Kruidtuinlaan, the hotel overlooks the Botanique park on one side, which forms part of the city ring road. Though the road is busy with several lanes of traffic on both sides, the proximity to the park buffers the urban feel, although rooms at the front of the hotel get some traffic noise. The main financial district is a 15-minute walk, or a five-minute ride on public transportation. There are a variety of shops and restaurants across from the hotel, and the popular shopping thoroughfare, Rue Neuve, is a five-minute walk away. The Rogier and Botanique subway/bus stations are within several hundred feet of the hotel’s front door (airport travel time is 45 minutes with one transfer), and the Grand-Place is within a 15-minute walk.

Rooms

Spacious and comfortable, but with a bland color scheme and laminate wood built-ins

Powder-blue and gray textiles and blond wood dominate the Standard Rooms, along with a few framed Klimt reproductions. Large tan-tiled bathrooms, which come with makeup mirrors, toiletries, and hairdryers, have shower/tub combos, and black-and-white Art Nouveau-style tiled floors. There's no counter space, but there are a few small shelves in the built-in panel mirror frame to place toiletries. All rooms have mini-fridges, smart flat-screen TV systems, seating areas, coffee- and tea-making facilities, small work desks with lamps, and free Wi-Fi.  Suites have parquet wood floors, separate living areas with multiple plush couches, and Krups coffeemakers. The mosaic-tiled bathrooms have walk-in showers, and organic bath products.

Features

Two restaurants, a fitness center with sauna, a business center

The small fitness center has wood floors, a handful of cardio and weight-training  machines, free weights, exercise balls, and exercise mats. There is an adjacent dry sauna with separate areas for men and women, and a business center near the lobby with computer terminals. The Nouveau Taste Restaurant and Deco Verre Bar & Brasserie offer distinct atmospheres, with Nouveau Taste more traditional and Deco Verre slightly sleeker, with low ambient lighting. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
