With its Bauhaus-style curved balconies and glass-paneled spiral staircase, the Leonardo Hotel & Residence Munich is certainly easy to spot -- especially as it stretches the length of the street. Stepping inside, the reception area combines contemporary furnishings, polished granite tiling, and enlarged Da Vinci sketches (in keeping with the Leonardo chain brand). While more recently renovated hallways are bright and modern, some are tired and gloomy with signs of scuffing and general wear. The vibe is quiet, unpretentious, and unfussy, and appeals to business guests, older couples, and those on longer-term stays -- though younger travelers might find it a little drab. 

The hotel is located on a tree-lined street in a leafy and largely residential Obergiesing district in the south of Munich. The surroundings are relaxed and peaceful, though a good 10-minute drive from the main tourist attractions of the city's historic center. The nearest public transport link is the Silberhornstrasse U-bahn station a three-minute walk away, which connects to Sendlinger Tor city gate to the Altstadt (old town) in five minutes. Munich International Airport is around 35 minutes by car, while public transport takes about an hour.

The hotel has 270 rooms, all of which feature smart yet simple modern decor. Most rooms open onto small furnished balconies overlooking the street, while many also extend to kitchenettes with microwaves, electric hobs, and fridges. Standard amenities include tea/coffee facilities, flat-screen TVs with cable channels (two Sky), and free Wi-Fi -- though many have complained of slow connections (paid upgrades are available). Bathrooms are generally spacious with heated towel rails, good quality toiletries, and showers or shower/tub combos. While most rooms are a reasonable size, reports suggest some are quite small. The Comfort Triple Rooms fit a third guest thanks to a sofa bed, but are definitely a tight squeeze. Rooms also lack air-conditioning, which can be an issue during the summer months.

The hotel's restaurant, La Locanda, offers a decent buffet breakfast of hot and cold items, though it's not included in the standard rate. This eatery is also open for dinner and serves Italian fare and wine; an outdoor terrace provides alfresco dining during warmer weather. Health facilities include a sauna, steam bath, "experience" showers, and a tiny gym with a few machines. Underground parking is available for a daily fee.
